Although some Japanese retail segments are struggling with reduced demand, luxury shopping venues in Japan's city centers continue to expand.
Premium department store chain Takashimaya opened additional floor space at its Osaka, Nanba store on March 2, with a crowd of over 1,000 anxious shoppers waiting to enter. The new floor space, added in the east wing of the store, brings the total amount of shopping space to 8,000 square meters - an increase of approximately 40%. The additional floor space also makes the Nanba Takashimaya store the second largest department store in Osaka following the Daimaru store in Osaka's Shinsaibashi district.
Nanba Takashimaya's new floor space features many premium brands popular with young women, such as "gokai." It also houses an expanded Louis Vuitton shop which offered Japanese shoppers their first glimpse at the brand's new range of products at the store on opening day.
