Tesla Effectively Withdraws from the Japanese Luxury Electric Vehicle Market

Tesla Japan announced on March 6 that it will discontinue production of its luxury EVs, the Model S and Model X, for the Japanese market.

The Model S was a sedan EV launched in Japan in 2013, and at the time had a cruising range of approximately 500 km, the longest range in Japan. The Model X was launched in Japan in 2016 and was Tesla’s first multi-purpose sports car (SUV) EV.

After April, these models are expected to be available only as stock and used vehicles.

It is said that this will effectively force Tesla to withdraw from Japan’s high-priced EV market.

EV sales in Japan, including those of other automakers, continue to be low. EV sales in Japan in February were 4,390 units, down 20% from the same month last year, and have been below the previous year’s level for 16 consecutive months.
