Strong Inbound Sales Boost Sales at Japan’s Department Stores in February

Sales at Japan’s four major department stores in February 2025 were up for all four companies compared to the same month last year.

Among the major department stores, Isetan Mitsukoshi saw sales increase by 2.3%, Takashimaya by 1.7%, Daimaru Matsuzakaya by 4.6%, and Hankyu Department Store by 0.6%.

The increase is believed to be the result of spending by visitors to Japan and the wealthy domestic consumers maintaining their purchases of luxury brand goods, watches, and jewelry.

This year, the Chinese New Year, when the number of Chinese visitors to Japan increases, falls in January, which was expected to result in lower sales in February, but even so, each company’s sales exceeded those of the same month last year. However, each company’s sales still exceeded the results of the same month last year. This proves that inbound consumption by visitors to Japan is strong.

Sales of luxury goods and cosmetics were apparently boosted by the increase in the number of foreign visitors to Japan.
