Uber Teens, a Taxi Hailing Service for Children, Launches Operations in Japan
Uber Japan announced the launch of “Uber Teens,” a new service that allows children ages 13 to 17 to hail a cab under the supervision of their parents or guardians, for the first time in Japan on November 11. The service is available in a total of 30 cities in 11 prefectures (Hokkaido, Aomori, Miyagi, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Ishikawa, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Okinawa), and aims to reduce the burden on parents to pick up and drop off their children and provide a safe means of transportation for them.
In recent years, as two-worker households have become more common in Japan, taking children to and from school and lessons has become a major burden for families. With the launch of the “Uber Teens” service, the company aims to alleviate this burden and attract new customers.
The “Uber Teens” service has already been launched in the U.S. in 2023, and includes various safety measures such as the use of location information, vehicle dispatch using PIN numbers, and an evaluation function for good drivers. Including Japan, the service will be offered in 40 countries.
This new service will not only reduce the burden on parents to pick up and drop off their children, but may also encourage children to take on new challenges.
