Sales at Japan’s Four Major Department Stores Rise, Supported by High-Priced Goods and Apparel sales
All four major department stores in Japan announced significant increases in same-store sales for September.
Overall sales were boosted by the easing of covid-19 action restrictions this year, as well as continued strong demand for luxury brands and jewelry.
Sales of fall/winter clothing were also strong for both men and women.
Isetan Mitsukoshi HD posted the highest sales growth rate at 22.8%. Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Store, Takashimaya, and Sogo & Seibu followed with sales growth rates of 22.4%, 20.1%, and 14.5%, respectively.
It is believed that consumers’ willingness to buy is returning to the pre-covid-19 disaster level.
