Shinjuku’s Mecca for Young People’s Fashion Closes

“SHINJUKU MYLORD,” a fashion building that has been a mecca for young people’s fashion in Shinjuku, Tokyo, closed its doors on March 16.

Opened in 1984, SHINJUKU MYLORD was a nine-story commercial facility directly connected to the south exit of Shinjuku Station, and housed more than 100 stores specializing in fashion for young women, as well as restaurants.

Mosaic Street, a section of MYLORD that connects the West and South Exits of Shinjuku Station, is lined with general merchandise stores and cafes, and has been popular among young people.

While Harajuku and Shibuya are the fashion mecca for young people in Tokyo, SHINJUKU MYLORD has been supported by a wide range of people, especially young people, in a manner different from those places.

SHINJUKU MYLORD’s sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024 are expected to increase 7.8% YoY to 8.1 billion yen. This is about 80% of its pre-COVID sales.

The closing of MYLORD is part of the Shinjuku Station West Exit Area Development Plan. The building will be demolished soon, and the surrounding area will be redeveloped to include a 260-meter-high skyscraper that will surpass the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
