Japanese Government Sets Target for Food and Beverage-Related Inbound Spending Triple the Current Level
According to the sources, the Japanese government is planning to increase inbound food and beverage-related consumption by visitors to Japan by nearly three times the current level.
The total amount of food and beverage-related consumption by visitors to Japan in 2023, including “food and beverage” and “food-related shopping,” was approximately 1.6 trillion yen. The government hopes to raise this figure to 4.5 trillion yen by 2030, nearly tripling the current figure, by strengthening the dissemination of information overseas and increasing the number of overnight stays in rural areas for foreign visitors.
This food and beverage-related consumption by visitors to Japan has surged 3.8-fold over the past decade.
Meanwhile, the government plans to raise the amount of revenue from overseas expansion of Japanese restaurant chains and food manufacturers to 3 trillion yen by 2030, nearly double the 1.6 trillion yen in 2022.
These revenues have expanded rapidly over the past five years by a factor of 2.7, driven by the growing popularity of Japanese food.
These goals will be included in the draft of the government’s new five-year basic plan for agricultural policy, which is expected to be announced soon.
