Record Number of Domestic Lodgers in Japan in 2024 Due to Increase in Visitors to Japan
The number of people who stayed overnight at hotels and inns in Japan in 2024 reached 651.49 million, a record high, according to overnight travel statistics released by a Japanese government agency on February 31.
The number of Japanese overnight stays totaled 486.68 million, down 2.6% from the previous year, while the number of foreign overnight stays totaled 163.6 million, up 38.9% from the previous year.
The reason for the large increase in the number of foreign tourists staying overnight is believed to be the increase in guests not only from Asia, but also from Europe and North America, where people are said to prefer to stay for consecutive nights, against the backdrop of the weak yen.
On the other hand, the reason for the decrease in the number of Japanese overnight stays is believed to be that the travel mood that increased after the COVID-19 disaster has subsided.
While travelers continue to stay in metropolitan areas such as Tokyo, Aichi, and Osaka, this report shows a notable growth in rural areas.
By prefecture, Ishikawa prefecture had the largest increase in overnight visitors, up 36% from the previous year, followed by Tottori, Gifu, Mie, and Yamanashi prefectures, up 31.8%, 24.1%, 18.5%, and 14.4%, respectively.
