Law Revisions Lead to Increased Injunctions of Imports of Fake Brand Goods
The number of cases in which customs offices across Japan stopped the import of counterfeit brand goods in the six months through June of this year was the highest for this time of year.
According to the Ministry of Finance, customs offices across Japan detained 18,153 cases of counterfeit brand goods from January to June this year, a 16.2% increase over the same period last year.
The main reason for this increase is believed to be a revision of the law last year that made imports of counterfeit brand goods for personal use also subject to a new crackdown.
China was the largest source of imports, accounting for more than 80% of the total.
Clothing was the most common type of merchandise at 32%, bags (including purses and handbags) at 20.1%, and shoes at 11.1%.
